Music IS everywhere!

First off, I would like to say that I am excited that I am able to blog about music this semester! This is a great way to express our love for music and glorify the Lord at the same time.

Music is in most everything we do. Even if you don’t play musical instruments or study voice; it can be very difficult to avoid music. Thankfully, music is a great way for us to express praise to our heavenly father.

Psalm 150: 1-6 says

Let All Things Praise the Lord

1 Praise the Lord!

Praise God in His sanctuary;

Praise Him in His mighty firmament!

2 Praise Him for His mighty acts;

Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!

3 Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;

Praise Him with the lute and harp!

4 Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;

Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!

5 Praise Him with loud cymbals;

Praise Him with clashing cymbals!

6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

4Praise the Lord!

I enjoy this verse because it lists many ways we can praise the Lord. This verse is also used to show praise through music!

God has done so much for us, and we love him for it, but we will never be able to love him as much as he loves us. We are not worthy to deserve his love, so praising him to show we are thankful to him, pretty much should be accustomed.

Psalm 92:1-5 is a good example of this

1 It is good to give thanks to the Lord, And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High;

2 To declare Your lovingkindness in the morning,

And Your faithfulness every night,

3 On an instrument of ten strings,

On the lute,

And on the harp,

With harmonious sound.

4 For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work;

I will triumph in the works of Your hands.

5 O Lord, how great are Your works!

Your thoughts are very deep.

Although music is one of the best ways to express praise to God, it can be played in ways that do not glorify him.

1 Corinthians 10:31

31Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

This verse shows that EVERYTHING you do should glorify the Lord. So playing music with curse words or messages that are evil…do not glorify God. Although this is true, it is very hard to play or listen to music that follows this in today’s time. Most movies and hit music have explicit content in their lyrics, so its hard to avoid it.

James 4:7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

This is a verse that correlates with temptation. If listening to corrupt music tempts you to do wrong, then you shouldn’t listen to it.

 I feel as christians we should play and listen to music that is appropriate. With that being said, I feel that it is okay to listen to music that isn’t necessarily christian music.

Romans 14:22-23

“The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.”

If you feel the music you listen to is wrong then it probably is.

Music is a gift from God, and I am very thankful that he has given it to us. We should use music to glorify him and praise him to give back, especially if the Lord has given you musical gift to lead others with.

Ephesians 4:11-12

11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,

Psalms 59:16

“But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress.”
